Synopsis

  • First teacher

    Here is my mother Adrian circa 1965 painting a panel of some sort. She was a working artist all through her life. My siblings and I were taught to draw and paint from an early age with patience and encouragement and I owe so much to her!!!

  • Atelier

    In my early 20s I moved to Florence to study at the Florence Academy of Art for 4 years. The school was in its nascent stage then, however we were lucky to have Daniel Graves, Simona Dolce, Kevin Gorges, Ramiro Sanchez, Anthony Ackrill, Cessna Decosimo and many other very talented artists to teach us drawing and painting from life.

  • murals

    After my four years at the Florence Academy I got a job painting murals in and around Tuscany with Alexander Hamilton we painted in many Private homes, the Palazzo Budini Gattai ,the Loggiato Dei Serviti and this ceiling in a church some where in Tuscany, It was just under 30 years ago and I forget where.

  • Paris

    I moved to Paris in 2000 and worked along side Furniture maker Antonis Cardew. A number of Portraits and I was very lucky to work with the charming and experienced Vianny Brintet on a series of Murals in Switzerland

  • California

    I moved to the Bay Area after a chance encounter with Designer Jessica Hall in Italy, I worked in California for many years, lots of Murals and portraits. Notably murals at the Sonoma Valley Hospital and the Sebastiani mansion along with a number of works in Pebble Beach and Carmel with my dear friend Scott Coulter (who sadly passed away recently)

  • Chattanooga

    I’m currently in Chattanooga Tennessee. I live here with my wife Dr. Suzannah Bozzone and my 3 children Gabriel, Milo and Madeleine

Biography

 

Early life

 

George Dawnay was born in England in 1970. His mother, artist Adrian Dawnay was very involved in his early artistic life, schooling all her children in the arts. George’s father Charles was a soldier in the ,Cold War, British army. This insured an early life of travel and living in different Countries including Germany, America and Africa. The family finally settled in England in the mid eighties.

 

Study and Murals

Dawnay began his formal studies with, the painter, Charles Weed, in London (circa 1992) before heading to the Florence Academy of Art where he studied, earning a scholarship, for 4 years being trained in the French Academic style, cast drawing, anatomical studies and portraiture. In 1998 Dawnay started an apprenticeship with the Mural painter Alexander Hamilton, together they went on to create a number of Murals in Italy and abroad. He then went to Paris to continue his mural studies with the French muralist Vianney Brintet. After being invited to San Francisco by Designer Jessica Hall he began coming to America more and more, eventually moving here permenantly in 2003 where he began an apprenticeship with sculpture Cessna Decosimo in Chattanooga Tennessee.

He now lives in Chattanooga with his wife and 3 children.
